The administrative and clerical field is made up of many rewarding careers, some of which do not require a college degree. This makes admin jobs very attractive for millions of candidates. If you want to make a lateral move or obtain a promotion, it is important to know which positions are the most likely to be available. Knowing this information will help you focus your efforts on the most promising positions. Here is a quick overview of some of the most in-demand admin jobs for 2013 and beyond.

 

If you are currently a file clerk or other entry-level clerical worker, consider using your experience to move into a receptionist position. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects that employment in this field will increase faster than average through the year 2020, so there is a good chance there is an open receptionist job in your area. Receptionists answer the telephone, greet visitors, and perform other administrative tasks. The experience you gain in this position is a good stepping stone to more advanced clerical jobs.

 

The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment for administrative assistants to keep pace with the average for other occupations between now and 2020. This makes administrative assistant one of the best admin jobs for those who have some administrative or clerical experience. Administrative assistants write correspondence, organize company files, schedule appointments, and perform other clerical and administrative tasks. If you have worked in this field for a decade or more, you might need to update your technology skills before applying for a promotion. Philip Moeller of "U.S. News & World Report" recommends brushing up on your computer skills and, if necessary, enrolling in a computer training program to bring your skills in line with those held by other applicants for desirable admin jobs.

 

If you have experience with bookkeeping or working in an accounting department, consider a job as an accounting or bookkeeping clerk. These admin jobs involve recording financial transactions and providing clerical support for accountants and other professionals. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment of accounting and bookkeeping clerks to increase by 14 percent through 2020, so your company may well have need of more accounting clerks in the near future. Do not overlook nonprofit organizations and government agencies if you want to leave your current company, as private sector employers are not the only ones who need accounting and bookkeeping clerks to verify financial transactions and produce financial records.

 

The administrative and clerical field provides many job opportunities for those who have excellent communication skills and the ability to use office productivity software. If you already have the basic skills and experience you need for one of these in-demand admin jobs or clerical jobs, you can use that experience to move from your current position into an advanced position with the same company. You can also use your experience to obtain a position with another employer in your area.

    Thanks for the comments. Diane, I agree with you completely. Having experience shows that you can do the work. Having a degree just means that you've attended enough classes. Not to belittle the value of a degree, but many companies don't value experience enough.

    Think it its good that they will hire you on your experience instead of needing a College Degree.  Experience I believe is more important, then you do not have to spend that much time on training employee.

    I like the ideal of not having to have a college degree.This is what has been making it hard for me to try something new is because of most places wanting a college degree.
