In response to issues surrounding the impact of Hurricane Sandy, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently announced it will extend deadlines for those affected by the storm. Taxpayers and tax collectors in the mid-Atlantic and northeast will have until Nov. 7 to file returns and documents normally due on Oct. 31.
Those who take advantage of this extension do not need to do anything besides file their returns as soon as possible. For further reference, the IRS posts all disaster-related tax announcements here.
After receiving word from the IRS, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) filed a request for broader relief and further extensions for filing returns. The request is addressed to the Commissioner of the IRS, Douglas H. Shulman, and signed by Jeffrey A. Porter, the Chair of the Tax Executive Committee. Among other things, the request asks for relief based on geography and situation. The full request from the AICPA can be read here.
