How to Look Forward to Every Day

Posted by in Career Advice

Life has its’ ups and downs. Since no one really knows how long they have to live here on the planet called earth, it is critical that you are able to live each day to the fullest. If you are like most people, you are going to have some days you look forward to and some days that you would like to avoid like a root canal. The key to getting the most out of each day is to have a strategy.

Seasonal Affective Disorder
If you are not an outdoor enthusiast who loves the winter’s cold, cloudy and snowy days that it brings to the northern part of the country, winter can be somewhat depressing. This type of weather affects a large part of the population in a negative way. This condition is referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

If you are in the southern part of the country, summer can be the most stifling and depressing time of the year. Temperatures of 100 plus degree days, and, depending on which part of the south you are in, the humidity or scorching dry heat, can bring with it many heat related problems.

Have Options
No matter what the weather is like, it is important to have options that allow you to do things that you enjoy that are not ruled by the climate in which you reside. One of the best ways to do this is to write out a list of all the things you enjoy doing. It should include your hobbies or pastimes that you take great delight in doing. The next step is to take a 3X5 card and fold in half so it looks like a small book. On the outside cover print out the words, “My Get Excited List.” On the inside pages, transfer the things you enjoy doing the most from your original list. When it is completed, put it in your wallet or purse, and carry it around with you everywhere you go. When you find yourself feeling a little low, take it out and read it over. Then make a date to do something on that list as soon as possible. When you work this system, you will find yourself looking forward to the days, no matter what the weather is like, and also following the advice of this poem by an anonymous author.

Life can’t give you joy unless you really will it.
Life just gives you time and space; it’s up to you to fill it.
