How To Land Your Dream Job Without Stretching The Truth

Although the job search is a competitive process, you don't have to stretch the truth to land your dream job. An honest approach shows that you are a true professional. Showcase your talents and skills to appeal to potential employers honestly and accurately.

Land your application materials in the right hand without stretching the truth by highlighting keywords used in the company's job description. Resist the temptation to overdo it, though. Use relevant skills, experience with software programs and equipment in your resume and cover letter, but only cite the keywords once to avoid getting flagged by an applicant tracking system.

Pay close attention to your formatting to emphasize your most relevant experience, skills and education. For example, if the job description lists certifications and certain degrees as required qualifications, make your headings within the resume highlight that you have these requirements. If you lack some of the skills desired, do not point it out or lie about it. Instead, focus on the skills and experience you do have that are relevant to the industry.

Address any gaps in your employment honestly in the cover letter. If you were out of work for an injury or due to family obligations, you don't have to reveal this information. However, if you also focused on enhancing your credentials by taking classes or attending workshops or seminars during this time, use these activities as the justification for the gap. Avoid pretending that the unemployment gap did not exist. Cite personal reasons without divulging too much information that can be used to discriminate against you.

Hiring managers and recruiters can easily track down the truth. Instead of stretching the truth or lying on your application materials to land that dream job, focus more on emphasizing your existing skills and talents to honestly acquire job opportunities.
