How Resume Keywords are Like SEO

People who are looking for jobs often search for resume tips online so that they can ensure they have a resume that gets noticed. Most resume tips also give people information about applying for jobs and posting their resumes online. When you're ready to hire new employees, you can easily find potential job applicants by searching for specific resume keywords. This makes recruiting new hires faster and more efficient.

Resume keywords are used like any other keywords. When you use keywords in your resume, the keywords are picked up by search engines on job searching websites, just like keywords on websites are picked up by Google's search engine. This means that people who are familiar with search engine optimization (SEO), or people who research resume tips that discuss keywords, can research industry-related keywords and include them in their resume or online profile.

Before you begin looking for potential new hires, you should make a list of relevant keywords to search for. Your list should include:

  • Industry-related keywords
  • Skill-specific keywords
  • Keywords related to a person's character

Keep in mind you will get better results if you search for keywords that are longer and specific. For example, if you are looking for an employee that has decent computer skills, don't type computer skills into the search box. Instead, you should search for specific computer programs that your company uses. This way, you don't have to weed through a massive amount of resumes to find people with the exact skills that you need.

It's also important to remember that even though most resume tips say to only include a few, very specific, keywords, many people tend to over-optimize their resumes. Also, it's common for people to exaggerate their skills on a job resume. In order to find the best job candidates make sure you read through the resume or profile before you send the person an offer to apply for the job. You should avoid candidates that overuse industry-specific keywords in their resume. For the most part, these are the people who have read through numerous resume tips quickly and are doing anything they can to get noticed by human resources professionals. While some of these people may be excellent applicants, it's also more likely that they've embellished their resumes just like they've over-stuffed it with keywords.

The Internet makes it easy for people to apply for jobs, just like it makes it simpler for you to find good job applicants. However, it's important to spend some time examining a person's resume and not taking the application further just because a profile appeared when you searched for keywords. As long as you remember how easy it is for people to find resume tips online that teach them how to use specific keywords and embellish their resumes, you should be able to spot people who aren't qualified quickly and move on to those who have the skills you're seeking.
