The other day I was having a conversation with my wife Elizabeth, and we were talking about some of the problems we were experiencing in our work and personal lives. As we stood there commiserating about our concerns, I said something that made us both laugh. At that moment, it suddenly occurred to me that the joy we experience in life is right in front of us; we just have to look for it in-between the lines of our lives.
So often, this joy is overlooked by our regrets of what did not happen yesterday or what will or will not happen tomorrow. Often we are not aware of the good times that are just waiting to be appreciated by our eyes, ears and emotions. It was John Lennon who said: “Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans.”
It is so easy to let life slip through our fingers and into the puddles of eternity unless we cup our hands and drink it in. How many times have you caught yourself missing something precious that was right in front of you? It is not hard to do. As a matter of fact, if you are not careful, it becomes a habit, a bad habit.
The loved ones in your life, including your pets, are just standing there waiting to be experienced. But, since your mind is moving at the speed of light, you are not even cognizant of the opportunity to appreciate them.
It is not too late to start changing your bad habits. Here are a few tips to help you experience the joy of being alive right now.
• Pause, close your eyes and take a deep breath.
• Upon opening them look and ask yourself what do you see?
• If it is a person, place or thing you see, what do you see that pleases you?
• Conclude by giving thanks for the opportunity to experience the best part of what is in front of you.
By taking the time to live and appreciate your life, by looking for it between the lines of your everyday challenges, you will help yourself get the most from living.
