How do you motivate yourself to transform your work life from mediocre to fantastic? Make one of your new year's resolutions to further your career. It's a great time to find the perfect job thanks to a growing economy, low unemployment and a competitive job market. Use these five tips to take your professional life to the next level in 2017.

1. Professional Development

Develop professionally by taking formal classes, going to conferences and learning new skills that can help you further your career. The best part of professional development is that you don't have to limit yourself to something related to your industry. If you're a manager looking to get a better grasp of human behavior, consider taking a psychology course. Perhaps you might want to become a leader within your field. If so, attend a weekend seminar on managerial leadership to help further your career. Many classes are available online, which means the possibilities for professional development are endless.

2. Know Your Worth

If you don't think you're getting paid enough, try asking for a raise. Before doing so, research what other people within your industry earn for your position, and make sure you're qualified to receive a pay increase. Don't ask for a pay raise if you haven't done anything to earn it. Knowing your worth and owning it makes you more confident when negotiating for higher pay.

3. Freelancing

Consider working as a freelancer on the side to expand your horizons and take advantage of the independent, self-starter aspect of your personality. You'll earn extra income and gain entrepreneurial experience you might not gain from a salaried position. Freelancing might take extra time out of your already-busy schedule, but it gives you the opportunity to explore various interest and can lead you on the path to a new and more enjoyable career.

4. Networking

Networking is essential for professionals seeking new career opportunities. Further your career by finding and connecting with professionals within your industry. Attend as many networking events as possible, and leverage your LinkedIn contacts effectively to find like-minded individuals who can help you move up the corporate ladder.

5. Progression

If you want to further your career, try making a progression proposal. Write down the skills you obtained since you started with your employer to determine which positions might be in your future. Do you have enough years under your belt to land a supervisory position? Do you have the skills and abilities to become a top-level manager? Make a flow chart to see where the possibilities take you.

How much you further your career in 2017 depends on you. There are plenty of opportunities out there, and the internet makes it easy to connect with like-minded people who can help. Take advantage of all your available resources to start building a fulfilling career.
