If you find yourself struggling to produce an effective resume that shows off your skills and your personality, you are not alone. Many applicants navigating through the job search find themselves using templates and examples from professionals who usually offer a cookie-cutter approach to writing CVs. Your resume, though, needs to stand out, which is why breaking the rules and focusing on telling your story may be a better strategy.

Target Your Search

To write an effective resume that shares your story in a way that catches the attention of your desired employer, you need to target your job search. Create a list of skills you possess and positions you aspire to. Investigate the opportunities directly related to your skills or career goals so that you can cater your resume to reflect your experience accurately.

Brand Yourself

Establish a reputation that shows you are an expert in your field. For example, if your target position is in sales, boost your online presence on social media platforms. Interact with fellow sales professionals and managers. Create a LinkedIn account and share informative articles and blogs that represent your views and strategies. Once you've determined and established your brand, market your reputation on your resume.

Research Viable Firms

Create a target list of employers that you would like to work for, so you can compile a customized resume tailored to each company you apply to. Research each firm thoroughly. Browse through the company's website and examine the LinkedIn profiles of its employees and supervisors. Network with professionals who are familiar with the firm.

Each resume you send should represent the specialty of the firm. For example, if your research reveals that a company thrives on philanthropy and community contributions, highlight your volunteer efforts. Show that you are the ideal candidate for the position by submitting an effective resume that shows how your skills and personal interests reflect the mission and goals of the company.

Make Your Format Stand Out

Hiring managers sift through hundreds of resumes that look exactly the same. Make your resume stand out by showing your personality within the design and format. Add a pop of color or graphic elements if you're applying within a creative industry such as marketing or graphic design. Include a headshot if you're targeting positions within sales or public relations.

Pay close attention to the readability of your application materials, too. For example, avoid using script font that is difficult to read. An effective resume looks clean and crisp while utilizing white space with a good balance of borders, division lines and sections.

Your personal and professional story is one that varies vastly from other candidates. Stand out from the crowd and capture the interest of potential employers by crafting an effective resume that is visually appealing and showcases your skills, your experience and — most importantly — your unique you.
