Conquering Myths to Get That Dream Job

Finding your dream job isn't a matter of if — it's a matter of when. There are so many types of positions in the contemporary marketplace that you can find your passion, create a niche and then make money as a professional. Unfortunately, your mindset and beliefs may prevent you from achieving the highest form of career bliss. Start by conquering these myths associated with your quest.

1. Lack of Confidence

When you lack confidence to find your dream job, you believe you cannot possibly land such a wonderful position. Instead of saying "I can accomplish my dreams," you fill your mind with "I can't do it." Fear of the unknown and fear of the long journey ahead may keep you back.

The trick is realizing you have to start somewhere. Try visualizing your ultimate goal and then work backwards to determine the steps you need to reach the end game. The sooner you start planning for the career you want, the sooner you will obtain your dream job.

2. Traditional Job Search Strategies

Conquering myths about a contemporary job search could mean letting go of traditional search methods. Submitting your paper resume, with an "objective" statement prominently at the top, to the desk of the human resources office does not cut it anymore.

Make connections with people in your field. Attend networking events in college that put you in touch with people who can steer you in the right direction. Network on LinkedIn and through social media — one of these connections could pay huge dividends in the future. Don't be afraid to reach out and find a mentor who can guide you along every step of your professional path.

3. Wrong Attitude

You might think you can never find your dream job. This attitude may come from setting your expectations too high and then failing to traverse the necessary steps to reach the pinnacle of your career. Consider this attitude as a symbolic mountain you have to climb to reach your career happiness.

Three types of people look at this mountain and form an attitude about this obstacle. One person may see the mountain as unclimbable and avoids it altogether. A second person gets halfway to the top and stops before the hardest part of the journey occurs — this is where someone sets up a base camp and becomes comfortable with the view. The third person climbs all the way to the top and gains valuable experience and life lessons on the way there.

To land your dream job, you need to be the person who climbs to the top. You may need to use different tools to reach the summit, but the view from up there is fantastic and exceeds your wildest imagination.

There is almost no excuse not to try to find your dream job in the contemporary labor market. Someone, somewhere, will pay for your talents if you gain the right experience, learn the proper skills and latch onto the most inspirational people.
