If you want to pursue a career in IT delivery, you should seriously look into sharpening your cloud-computing skills and knowledge. The reason: Cloud computing is expected to reshape the delivery of IT resources.
Cloud computing replaces hardware and storage input and output with a virtual “pay-as-you-go” server via the Internet. Companies will need vendor managers--six-figure income pros who will help integrate cloud computing into the IT operations of today's and tomorrow's enterprises.
A recent report by EMC and the Centre for Economics and Business Research noted that cloud computing would produce 446,000 jobs every year through 2015. Most of these jobs will be in distribution, retail and hospitality. In addition, the public sector is expected to gain 801,000 positions over the next five years, with banking, financial and business services sectors gaining 207,000 jobs.
Taking a “cloud” position within a company means managing a cloud provider and working within an enterprise to make the change to cloud delivery. As a cloud pro, you’ll no longer be concerned with the grunt work of storage--provisioning storage arrays, managing software updates, replacing hardware and cabling. Providers will handle that aspect of it. Instead, you’ll configure the network firewall and determine storage capacity and deal with vendors. You’ll become an expert in outsourcing, automation and utility computing. In short, you’ll develop a business-process level expertise and segue into a more non-technical, business-oriented paradigm.
Small and medium enterprises will be first to embrace the cloud architecture. Who wants to build a hundred million dollar data center when you can move to a cloud? So look to these firms for job opportunities.
