Are You Ready For a Video Interview?

As companies look for ways to cut costs, save time and communicate with job candidates across geographical boundaries, video interviews are quickly becoming the norm. According to a survey by the Robert Half company OfficeTeam, 64 percent of respondents were using video interview methods in 2012. Although a video interview may not involve the same preparation as a traditional interview, there are still plenty of things to learn to ensure a successful meeting.

An important step in video interview preparation is to become familiar with the technology used. Although many companies use popular video call programs such as Skype, others use services that allow you to record and send your responses to a series of questions, sometimes with the opportunity to record multiple tries. Open and test the program or software the company is using to ensure you can set things up in time for the video interview. Even if you are familiar with the technology, ensure your computer or mobile device is working properly and that your Internet connection is not interrupted.

Even if you are not leaving your home, you should dress for a video interview just like you would for a traditional interview. However, you may choose to only dress professionally from the torso up as long as the camera does not catch a glimpse of your casual clothing. You must also consider what your outfit looks like on camera. For instance, if you plan to wear a white suit, do not situate your interview space so you are sitting against a white wall.

When setting up the background for your video interview, choose a plain wall with as few distractions as possible. Avoid placing the camera to face the room in case there is a mess or another person walks in during the interview, and ensure the area is well-lit.

It is also helpful to practice answering possible interview questions with a friend or colleague. Practice in front of a mirror or using your computer's camera. The day before your interview, perform a run-through with the clothing, camera positioning and lighting you plan to use, and make any necessary adjustments. During your practice interview, remember to look into your camera rather than at the face on your screen. This is the only way to simulate eye contact with the interviewer during a video interview.

Interview preparation is key for a successful video meeting with your potential employer, and it shows the interviewer that you are confident, prepared and serious about the opportunity. If you are doing a live interview, remember to keep your answers short and concise to hold the interviewer's attention. As you prepare and become comfortable with the technology, you may find that a video interview is not much different than any other interview.

I have been contacted by several companies requesting a video interview and want to sent it up on Yahoo I. M. (please note this is a scam) Job interviews should be done through VPN or a creditable website which is a protected site. Please watch out for these scams.
    Thank you,
