Feeling burnt out in your current job? Wishing that there was something you could do to make it more interesting? Are you no longer feeling fulfilled? It happens to all of us at one time or another. There isn't much else that can make us feel like we are just wasting time than feeling unsatisfied at our jobs. The average person spends upwards of 50 hours a week at work or doing extra work at home. Our job happiness can have a huge affect on our entire lives. So,what can you do? Finding another job in this tough job market can be difficult. But don't lose hope, there are things you can do to revitalize your job without walking away entirely.
Trying to find balance and zen at work is a challenge. The Buddha said “Change comes from within; Do not seek it without.” But how do you make a change inside yourself that will make you job more rewarding? Sometimes it just takes small changes to jump start yourself and get out of the routine you are in.

Document the lessons you have learned- If you have been at your job for a long amount of time, it is certain that you have learned strategies that work and have opinions about strategies that just don't work for you. You most likely have learned many things that could be valuable to others that are just entering the career path. Write them down and think about how you could share your wisdom. Maybe you could write a blog, an e-book or even just prepare a presentation to share with others on your team.
Reuse, recycle and revamp- Thinking about the things that you have learned in your positon, you probably have found some advice to be tried and true, and other things that don't work so well. Take the time to look at the things that don't work well and find ways that they can be improved to provide better results. Giving thought to what you can do to achieve greater results will help start the fire of motivation that can make you more interested in your job.
Simplify business models or processes- There are always the things that we do at our offices that seem to be overly complicated and there isn't really a reason for them aside from “this is always how we do it.” The sad truth is that simplifying things takes time. So take the time to look at these things and try to come up with a way to change them to make them more simple, more efficient or more cost-effective.
Devote yourself to new learning- Finding a challenge can be one of the best ways to jump start your job. When you aren't challenged, it is easy to get lazy and apathetic about your day to day work. Try taking a course in your job field, attend a workshop, take a class online or even just check out a book from the library that deals with your career field. Turning on your intellect makes you feel optimistic and more willing to try something new.
Find new ways to use your talents- If you are serious about looking for a new career, spend some time looking at your talents objectively. Often you will find that many of them can cross over into other fields, and those may be fields that would give you the challenges you are looking for. For example, someone who is good a building rapport with clients could cross that over into fields like counseling, teaching or customer service to name a few. If you are going to make a change because you are unsatisfied in your current career, think before you make a lateral move. Often, when you are seriously dissatisfied with a job, what you are really unhappy with is the career field itself.
