Promoting yourself doesn't have to turn you into a jerk.
When you are looking for a job or trying to get ahead in your career, self-promotion is a big deal. We all want to impress others and have them think that we are successful. For many people, this means driving the best car or making tons of money. The drive to reach some material goalpost in order to feel successful is universal, but it's still flawed.
The thing is, we are all so much more than what we own. People are more impressed by who you are than what you have. You don't have to be a jerk or be conceited to impress people.
Here are 5 intangible things that impress people without having to be a jerk:
Be true to yourself - So many times people think that they have to put on a mask or be someone else at work in order to succeed. This might work in the short term, but before you know it, the real you will have disappeared. When you can't be yourself, you have to wonder how you can expect others to like you if you don't.
Genuinely care about others - When you really care about people, about the job you do and the people you work with, it shows in everything you do. The more you share love, kindness and compassion, the more it will be given to you. Being a jerk and stepping on others just because you can might make you successful on the outside, but I'm sure that on the inside, it's hell.
Smile often - Smiling just makes you feel better. It's a funny thing, when you smile at someone, they just can't help but smile back. When you pass a complete stranger, look them in the eyes and smile. Once you get in the habit, you'll see that everyone you pass will assume that you are a great person.
Address people by their names - People love to hear their own name, so use it often. Try to remember the names of everyone you meet. When you run into them and call them by name, they will be flattered that you still remember and they will think much more highly of you and themselves. When you make people feel important, they can't help but to like you more.
Say please and thank you - This one is huge. I know that you were told to always say please and thank you when you were a child, but many adults forget this. There is nothing that gives you as big of a return as a please or a sincere thank you. Use those words often.
