5 Tips For Building Your Professional Reputation

Posted by in Career Advice

Build your reputation as a leader with these tips.

There is a lot of information available on creating your personal brand. Branding yourself is so important. Not just for your job search, but for your career growth in general. When you think about some of the most easily recognizable brands today, you will immediately have an idea of who the company is and if they are a winner in their market, or if they are a brand to avoid.

Creating the brand is only the first step. In order to give it value, you have to build brand equity. You can build this type of equity in your personal brand by setting high goals for yourself and developing the professional reputation of being a winner.

So, how can you become a winner? Here are some tips to help:

  • Look for opportunities to compete and win. Be prepared to put any minor failures or setback behind you, knowing that you tried hard and will be in a better position to win next time.
  • Have a positive attitude. People just can't help but like optimists and a positive attitude is highly contagious. When you keep a positive mindset in life, it will open the doors to creativity and success.
  • Be willing to work hard. Success doesn't happen by giving the minimal amount of effort. In order to really achieve success, you're going to have to work really hard for it. Be willing to give a little more and work a little harder than everyone else.
  • Protect your reputation. The world is becoming a smaller place every day. Use caution when networking online. Never use social media as a forum for venting your frustrations and negative emotions. Before you post anything to Facebook, Twitter or Linkedin, ask yourself “Is it true? Is it helpful?”. If the answer to either of those questions is no, then you shouldn't post it. Trust me, posting in haste without thinking has ruined many professional reputations and even careers.
  • Be brave. Without bravery, you can't ever truly win. Winning big means taking big risks and giving it all you've got. If you are too afraid to fail, you will sabotage your own efforts again and again.

Once you have your personal brand in place, you can build enormous brand equity by setting your goals high and working hard to achieve them. And if you fail, just chalk it up to practice and try again.
