When the hiring manager turns the tables during your next job interview and gives you the chance to ask your own questions, don't let the opportunity pass you by. Asking a few thoughtful questions shows you're enthusiastic about the position and interested to learn more. When making your list, be sure to include these five must-ask questions.
1. "What Are the Daily Responsibilities of This Position?"
By asking this question, you get a sense of what a typical day may look like. Is most of the day spent behind a desk? Does the position require travel or overtime? What duties must be done every day? By learning these answers during the job interview, you can determine how well you might fit into the position.
2. "What Are Some of the Challenges the Person in This Position May Face?"
This question lets you dig deeper than what's listed on the position description. If office politics, difficult clients or problematic co-workers are a concern, you can learn about the issues early on. If these problems come to light in the job interview, mention a time you faced a similar challenge in the past and tell how you worked through it.
3. "What Advancement Opportunities Are Available Within the Organization?"
When you ask the hiring manager about advancement opportunities, you demonstrate that you have career goals that are important to you. Whether you're hoping for on-the-job training, educational opportunities or future promotions within the organization, the answer to this question helps you determine if the hiring company is a good fit for you.
4. "What Do You Like Most About Working Here?"
Asking this question during the job interview allows you to get some personal insights of the hiring manager and other interview panelists. Pose the question to each interviewer to get different perspectives. Pay attention to their body language and voice tone as each talk. If they're genuinely excited as they discuss the organization and its opportunities, consider it a good sign.
5. "What Are the Next Steps in the Interview Process?"
Ask about the next steps in the interview process so you know what to expect and to show the hiring manager you're excited to move forward. The hiring manager may indicate when he plans to wrap up interviews, or the company may require a second round of job interviews. If you have a timeframe in mind, you know when to follow up or expect a call.
When asked by the hiring manager if you have any questions during the job interview, the last thing you want to say is "no." Add these five must-ask questions to your job interview list to gain more insight into whether the position is right for you.
